1. Welcome, Attendance
2. Return and review Vocabulary Tests on Unit 1 - Adjectives
3. Students will discuss the concept of public punishment in modern society. What is appropriate and what is not?
4. Students will read and take notes on The Scarlet Letter as a whole novel: plot, setting, structure, point of view, major characters, themes, major symbols, and irony. Students will be encouraged to annotate details from their reading that relate to these concepts.
5. Students will review significant details from Chapters 2 & 3.
6. Students will review Scarlet Letter Experiment. Create scarlet letter to wear all day Friday, November 7th.
Homework: Create Scarlet Letter and wear it all day Friday, November 7th. Work on assigned reading (Chapters 6 & 8) and annotations in The Scarlet Letter which are due on Friday.

2. Students will copy down the vocabulary Word of the Day. In addition to recording the definition, students will create a web of information to help them remember the word: alleviate.
3. Students will review significant details and literary elements from Chapters 1-4 and comparing annotations from Chapters 2 & 3. (Hand out lime green sheets to 4B)
4. Students will review significant details and literary elements from Chapters 5 - 8 and compare annotations from Chapters 6 & 8.
5. Students will view excerpt of Scarlet Letter movie released in 2003.

2. Guidance Counselor College Planning Presentation. (60 minutes)
3. Students will copy down the vocabulary Word of the Day. In addition to recording the definition, students will create a web of information to help them remember the word: coerce.
4. Students will share important annotations from Chapters 16 and 23. (4B students will finish sharing annotations from Chapters 6 & 8.)

3. Students will review the format and guidelines for a Socratic seminar. Seated in a large circle, students will respectfully discuss predetermined questions about The Scarlet Letter referring to their notes when necessary. Ideally, each student will make 3 (or 4) constructive contributions (textually relevant thoughts, questions, musings, etc...) to the discussion.
4. Students will turn in prepared written responses to 5 questions.
5. Students will turn in their annotated Scarlet Letter novels. Students will be sure their name is in their book.

3. Students will finish discussing questions for the Scarlet Letter Socratic Seminar. Students will diligently strive to contribute a minimum of 3 times in the student-led discussion. Students will endeavor to understand one another's opinions on the questions presented - DISCUSS not DEBATE.
4. Students will review the expectations on the Scarlet Letter Reflection and finish for homework.
5. Students will identify the celebrities in a group of photographs and determine what they have in common: society has shunned them at one time or another.
6. Students will review a list of celebrities who have fallen from grace or have been scandalized for their behavior/misbehavior. Students will discuss the comparative fallout from any of the scandals.

5. Students will choose one celebrity, professional athlete, politician, or world leader who has fallen from grace due to a scandalous situation. Students will begin work on a short, expository research essay about the person, the scandal, and his or her fall from grace. Students will include how the individual was treated by society as a result of the scandal.
6. Students will move to the computer lab in Room 227 to work on research assignment.
