5. "The Pit and the Pendulum" Given a list of nine words, students will predict the basic plot of "The Pit and the Pendulum" given what they know of Poe as a writer. (darkness, pit, walls, rats, spicy meat, arm, pendulum, belt, robe) Students will share ideas with small groups then with the class. Students will read/listen to an abridged version of the story to compare results.

3. Kahoot - Students will participate in a Kahoot on Edgar Allan Poe to review biographical and literary facts about the author.
4. "The Masque of the Red Death" by Edgar Allan Poe - Given 8 phrases, students will explain their significance to the storyline: red death, locked abbey, masquerade ball, ebony clock, seven chambers, drawn dagger, midnight visitor, empty costume.
5. Students will watch two short YouTube clips analyzing and explaining "The Masque of the Red Death."
Homework: none :) Have a relaxing Spring Break. See you on Monday, April 13th!

2. Writing - Students will write about the theme of inevitability. Brainstorm ideas which are inevitable (death, aging, change, emotions, crime, conflict, etc...) Share and create class list. Consider the connection between temptation and inevitability (Example: Temptation leads people into inevitable circumstances.) Identify a symbol for inevitability (stop sign, infinity symbol, door, etc...). Students will complete this statement: When I see a closed door, I... and then share responses. Students will consider the tone each student creates in his/her response: curious, angry, suspicious, hopeful, content, etc...
3. Students will listen to a live audience recording of "The Masque of the Red Death" to remind themselves of the elements of the story. As they read and after, students will discuss how Poe created suspense. Between now and next block, students will search for elements of Dark Romanticism and features of Poe's writing style.
Homework: Analyze Poe's short story for elements of Dark Romanticism. Be prepared for quiz and in-class writing assignment on Wednesday.

5. Read pages 162-163 in your Holt Reader prior to reading "The Raven." How do the sound devices add to the enjoyment of the poem? Make inferences and draw conclusions about what the speaker feels based on the language Poe uses.
